Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for me to receive belts in Jiu Jitsu?2026-05-17T23:11:34+00:00

There are two separate belt systems for Kids and Adults.

The Kid’s belt system goes from White belt to Green belt and Discontinues the year the child turns 16 years old.  If someone 16 years or older holds a rank in the kid’s belt program, they would then need to be promoted to the first adult belt: Blue belt.  The Kid’s ranking system is based on a mix of Class Attendance, Skill Development,  and Meeting ALL Belt Testing Requirements.

Adults have 5 total belts Starting with White belt and progressing through Black belt.   It often takes many years to receive a Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, 8-10 years on average.  Belts are rewarded on a basis of Class Attendance, Mastery of Technique and Concepts, Knowledge of BJJ and Alliance Team History, and Basic Understanding of the Point System and Rules of Jiu Jitsu.

What are the risks of injury in Jiu Jitsu?2026-05-17T23:28:20+00:00

Safety is imperative in our Academy.  We do not believe that being injured while training BJJ should be something that is normalized.  You’ll see people joking often online about their BJJ injuries, but this is often do to a poor training environment and lack of proper training culture and etiquette.   We believe students should be taught how to train safely and properly so that BJJ can be a life long enjoyment.  Learning how to treat yourself, your training partner, respect the rules of BJJ, and letting go of your ego are all important parts of longevity in Jiu Jitsu training.  That said, our instructors still pay close attention and strive to maintain a safe training environment.

Do I need to “Get in Shape” to train Jiu Jitsu2026-05-17T23:39:26+00:00

The Short answer is No!  Jiu  Jitsu WILL GET YOU in shape!  It is amazing the exercise you get while enjoying the training and learning new techniques.  You will gain lean muscle mass, lose body fat, gain flexibility & mobility, see cardio vascular improvement, all while learning how to defend yourself.  And Let’s not forget about mental health.  The challenges we face on the mat help prepare us for the daily struggles of life.  Jiu Jitsu is a total Mental and Physical workout that improves your daily life.

Can anyone train Jiu Jitsu?2026-05-17T23:47:16+00:00

Our belief is YES!  Jiu Jitsu is a personal journey, one in which your only goal is to improve yourself from the day before.  For some that means testing themselves in the competition ring, but for others that can be as simple as being able to get themselves up off the ground easier, or even make it through the day with a little less anxiety.  You set your goals and try to meet them, all with the help of Jiu Jitsu.  If we seem overly optimistic, it is probably because we have all changed our lives for the better with Jiu Jitsu.  Many of us have conquered life long demons to become better versions of ourselves.  And because we know that is the power Jiu Jitsu has, The power to heal and change us, we want to share it with the world.
