Can Anyone train BJJ or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? If your answer is no, you may have a misconception of this beautiful art!
Step into the right Academy and you will realize there are people of all shapes and sizes training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Men, Women, young and old, it doesn’t matter. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ, really is the art for everyone. Let’s explore the history of this art as well as some common misconceptions. Hopefully we can prove to you that BJJ is not only something you can do, but something that will change your life.
We call it the Gentle Art or in Portuguese, Arte Suave. Most know it as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ. Known for it’s efficient use of leverage to overpower larger opponents, it is the world’s fastest growing martial art. It is truly the martial art for everyone. Many martial arts rely on speed, agility, flexibility, or athleticism. If you are lacking in these, you may never see improvements. Jiu Jitsu requires only one thing, dedication!
BJJ first gained notoriety in the early 90’s. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) showcased a small, somewhat scrawny looking man, defeating his much larger opponents. This man, Royce Gracie, became an integral part of the growth of BJJ. The Gracie family is credited for bringing BJJ to the U.S.A. They knew they could showcase their families Martial art in a contest like the UFC. The family had many fighters. They used Royce for a specific reason. Royce was an average built person. They knew if they used a muscle bound athlete, it would not prove what they set out to prove. Which was, the art, not the person, was the reason for winning the contest.
This is was to prove the point we are making now. Anyone can train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Now we understand most people don’t want to fight in Mixed Martial Arts contests. And rightly so! But in this day and age, self defense should be something everyone considers. It is important to be able to protect yourself. BJJ is simply the best solution for learning self defense. A good fundamentals program should offer lots of self defense.
Maybe you are more interested in getting a work out. We can all use more exercise in our daily life. BJJ is great for physical exercise. Exercise helps us stay healthy, relieve stress and most importantly releases endorphins! And you don’t have to be in shape to get started. The great thing about BJJ is, it will get you in shape. More important, you’ll be having so much fun, you won’t even realize you are exercising.
“I’m to stressed to start anything new”. Maybe you just need a break from your daily grind. BJJ is great for your mind! You’ll often hear it referred to as “Chess on the Mat”. Once you start, you will soon figure out why. It is just like a game of chess between you and your opponent. Except instead of chess pieces, we are moving our bodies. Intrigued Yet?
“I need to get in shape before I train BJJ”. I hear this all the time. There has never been a more untrue statement. An Academy with a strong fundamentals program should be able to get anyone started right away. Many of us have physical limitations that keep us from trying new things. Sometimes we are even worried about hurting ourselves because of these issues. Rest assured, BJJ is safer than many of the other things in your daily life.
“I’m too small/Not strong enough”. You don’t need to be anything! If someone tells you that you aren’t strong enough to perform a Jiu Jitsu technique, find a new academy! BJJ is about learning to work with what we have got! Of course we can all workout and get stronger. Of course we should. Being healthy is part of the Jiu Jitsu lifestyle. But ultimately the technique is what makes BJJ so effective. We should be able to effectively apply it to a larger opponent. After all, this is a self defense art. How often are we attacked by someone smaller and weaker than us?
